Jurtschitsch gets Top Marks in Japan and Great Britain
Grüner Veltliner is hip!

home
"The typically Austrian style of spicy-fresh white wine is now making a splash on a lot of markets!" Edwin Jurtschitsch notes with pleasure. Together with his two brothers Paul and Karl, he directs the traditional family winery Sonnhof in Langenlois (Kamptal/Austria).
But spicy Grüner Veltliner has not only created fashion; its full-bodied representatives, with the typical savor of the terroir, have proved their worth in international competitions, as well. In the past weeks, the best Grüner Veltliners of the Jurtschitsch family winery were awarded top marks:

Number One in Tokyo
Some 1,500 wines from 23 countries were tasted and evaluated in June at the 2004 Japan Wine Challenge at the Tokyo Hilton. The Japanese Sommelier Association and the Institute of Masters of Wine provided the panel of judges, under the direction of Steven Spurrier, one of the most famous British wine critics. Only about 6% of the competing wines received Gold Medals, one of them being the Jurtschitsch Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben 2002. The grapes for this wine came from vines averaging 45 years of age. Thanks to the low yield from these old vines, the resulting wine is rich in substance, well-balanced and fruity.

Gold and Silver in London
The International Wine Challenge in London is another major contest. It has been called "the world's largest wine competition". A panel comprising more than 550 judges tests nearly 10,000 wines from all over the world. One of the gold medals was awarded to Grüner Veltliner Spiegel Reserve 2002: it is the winery's most concentrated and complex Veltliner, grown on deep loess soil. In addition, Grüner Veltliner Eiswein Spiegel 2002 won a silver: a wine with a delicately exotic nose, elegant sweetness and a subtle acid structure.

And yet another silver...
....this time, for the GV Spiegel Reserve 2002 at the Wine&Spirit International Competition in London.
