The charismatic Portuguese winegrower group Douro Boys (Quinta do Vallado, Niepoort, Quinta do Crasto, Quinta Vale D. Maria, Quinta do Vale Meão) is known around the world for the top quality of their wines. Since the 2003, the congenial winemakers have been tirelessly touring all inhabited continents, beating the marketing drum for the wines of Portugal – and especially for the Douro Valley.
But what good would international success be without recognition in their own country? It is even more gratifying to the Douro Boys that they were simply inundated with honours at this year’s gala presentation ‘Revista de Vinhos’, the most important award ceremony of the Portuguese wine industry.
Revista de Vinhos, Portugal’s most influential wine magazine, holds this star-studded gala – known as the ‘Portuguese wine Oscars’ – once each year. On the 12th of February, more than 1000 guests hailed and celebrated the stars of the domestic winemaking scene at a venue that is nothing short of spectacular: the Sangalhos velodrome, one hour’s drive south of Oporto.
And by the time the evening drew to a close, the Douro Boys had collected fourteen individual awards. This serves to underscore yet again the fact that their tireless efforts are on the right track, achieving the finest quality in wine while pursuing an attentive engagement with the precious traditions, landscape and culture of the Douro Valley. Certainly appropriate, that they are regarded as the standard-bearers for Portuguese wine.
Again and again, the Douro Boys were called onstage!
Producer of the Year: Quinta Vale D. Maria
Cristiano van Zeller and his daughter Francisca can certainly be proud of winning the Producer of the Year award. Their winery on the Rio Torto (a side valley off of the Douro) is well known for the noble expression of their long-lived wines.
Identity and Character: Niepoort
A personality whose participation has provided substantial and consistent impetus for the Portuguese wine-wonder of the last decade: Dirk Niepoort. Constantly searching for freshness and finesse, he is responsible for producing many of the nation’s iconic wines: Charme, Robustus, Tiara, Coche, Turris, Poerinho, Conciso…
2,200 wines were tasted and evaluated in the previous year. Only thirty of them were deemed so extraordinary as to be honoured with the Excellence Award. And no fewer than three out of these thirty come from the vineyards of the Douro Boys!
