The process of selection for these Asia Awards is rather exciting: 300 culinary journalists, restaurant critics, chefs and restaurant owners each choose ten restaurants and rank them according to preference. One essential stipulation: each individual casting a ballot must have dined in every one of the restaurants selected in the preceding eighteen months.
And the result: Restaurant Gaggan in Bangkok lands first place! This is already the fourth time that Gaggan has been crowned as the best restaurant in Asia.
Here the listing of the ten best restaurants:
1. Gaggan, Bangkok
2. Den, Tokyo
3. Florilege, Tokyo
4. Suhring, Bangkok
5. Odette, Singapore
6. Narisawa, Tokyo
7. Amber, Hong Kong
8. Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet, Shanghai
9. Nihonryori RyuGin, Tokyo
10. Nahm, Bangkok

‘It is a truly unique opportunity, to have so many marvellous chefs and gourmets assembled in one place. We hope that having our wines present as “participants” in the event will open yet another door in the market for Portuguese wine in Asia. We met quite a number of engaging individuals, and formed new relationships’, says João Ferreira Álvares Ribeiro, proprietor of Quinta do Vallado.
What then, is the Douro Boys recipe for success?
The Douro Boys love the Douro River Valley and all that goes with it: the breathtaking landscape, the authenticity of the inhabitants, the marvellous cuisine – and last but not least, the magnificent vineyards. Since they began working together fifteen years ago, making the wines of the five quintas known all over the world, many wine experts and journalists have taken notice of this exciting region. They keep up with the wines of the Douro, and taste them every year. As far as ratings are concerned, the Douro Boys are not only ahead of the crowd in the Douro Valley, but figure in the top rank overall in Portugal. About the Douro Boys
The Douro Boys, a group of five renowned wine producers from the Douro Valley (Francisco Ferreira – Quinta do Vallado, Tomás Roquette – Quinta do Crasto, Dirk van der Niepoort – Niepoort Vinhos, Cristiano van Zeller – Quinta Vale D. Maria and Francico Olazabal – Quinta do Vale Meão), have been travelling the world together with great enthusiasm since their founding in 2003, making the special character of Douro wines better known.
