Winegrower Markus Huber and the crisis

Finally, time for fatherhood…

Markus Huber has become one of the fixed stars on the Austrian wine scene. In just a few years, the Traisental grower has managed to transform his enterprise from a small sideline business into one of the country’s leading export estates. One can easily imagine what Corona and the attendant measures have meant for his company… But Markus manages to discover some positive things in a difficult time.

‘Usually I am only infrequently at home from March to June, because it is the time of the big wine fairs and presentations all over the world. From Düsseldorf to San Francisco, I have to present and promote my wines’, explains Markus Huber. This year, all these trips have been cancelled. And the sales curve runs diametrically opposite to the infection curve.

Markus Huber – in whose athletic frame one easily perceives the enthusiastic footballer – finds a moment to be grateful.

‘I have three daughters. The youngest just learned to ride a bicycle with me today. That makes me so happy that I am almost grateful for the crisis’, gasps Markus Huber, who is trotting next to his happily-pedalling four-year-old Louisa.

Markus Huber is a member of the winegrowers association Österreichische Traditionsweingüter, who have set themselves the task of classifying the vineyard sites along the Danube. One »Erste Lage« (first growth) from Huber’s estate is the Grüner Veltliner from Ried Berg, as the name suggests an upper-elevation site.

The 2019 vintage of this wine can be tasted for the first time at the Erste Lage presentation of the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter, which takes place on Saturday 5 September 2020.
