‘Its uniqueness, diversity and history – that is what I love about the Douro. It's an inspiring and challenging place, that is always surprising me’. – José Luis Moreira da Silva from Quinta dos Murças (Esporão)
The synergy between the Douro and its winegrowers
The Douro is one of the world’s oldest wine regions (demarcated in 1756) and has been recognised as a World Heritage Site, thanks to the human factor in its development. The terroir is unforgiving schist, which growers have physically cracked and crushed to accommodate vines. In the last twenty years, the doors have been opened to many new producers and estates, since the region began to produce high-quality Douro DOC still wines in addition to its traditional Ports. The emergence of a new generation of winemakers, their enthusiasm and energy have helped to dramatically improve the quality of Douro wines.
The diligent, knowledgeable and quality-focused winegrowers of the Douro Valley are dedicating their lives to producing and marketing the finest wine possible.
‘The Douro as it is one of the most beautiful wine regions of the world, with its old stone terraces and the beautiful river. It is also one of the oldest wine regions dating back to Roman times and beyond. Still undiscovered and stunningly inspirational’. – Sophia Bergqvist from Quinta de la Rosa

In order to tell the tale of ‘The New Douro’, one must first cast a glance back at the history of ‘The Old Douro’. Port has been produced there for more than 300 years, but the production of still wines first picked up momentum after the end of the Second World War. The winegrowers’ group ‘The New Douro’ came to life in 2004, thanks to Paul Symington, Dirk Niepoort and Cristiano van Zeller, with the goal of promoting still wines from the Douro Valley. This was seen as a paradigm-shift at a time when a new generation of young growers took the helm from their elders, and recognised in one another the opportunity for creating and developing synergy (rather than indulging in rivalry), in order to achieve a common goal – making first-rate still wines in the Douro! Thus, with ‘The New Douro’, a new era began in the long and storied history of the region’s wine trade.
