Douro Primeira Prova 2019
The Douro’s many faces
These folks cultivate their grapevines in one of the most strikingly beautiful places in the world, but the Douro River Valley demands more than just passion. Here, the people dedicate their lives to creating distinctive wines in this extremely challenging environment. The tasting event Douro Primeira Prova 2019 will offer a unique opportunity to get to know the Douro producers.
The marvellously rich history, the breathtaking landscape – and especially the inhabitants: these things are what makes the Douro Valley and its wines so extraordinary. Its landscape offers an exceptional example of humanity’s unique relationship with nature and the environment, where this alliance has produced a cultural panorama of remarkable beauty. More than 2,000 years of viticulture have shaped the Douro Valley into an intricately terraced, vine-covered paradise with wine at the epicentre.
Come and meet the exceptional winegrowers of the Douro Valley at the Douro Primeira Prova 2019: twenty-six leading wine estates from the Douro are hosting a preview tasting of their most recent vintages. The exceptional silent tasting is open exclusively to wine professionals and will take place from 3–5 June 2019 at Museu do Douro in Peso da Régua. Some 150 wines can be tasted and evaluated in the format of a ‘silent tasting’. ‘Its uniqueness, diversity and history – that is what I love about the Douro. It's an inspiring and challenging place, that is always surprising me’. – José Luis Moreira da Silva from Quinta dos Murças (Esporão)
The synergy between the Douro and its winegrowers
The Douro is one of the world’s oldest wine regions (demarcated in 1756) and has been recognised as a World Heritage Site, thanks to the human factor in its development. The terroir is unforgiving schist, which growers have physically cracked and crushed to accommodate vines. In the last twenty years, the doors have been opened to many new producers and estates, since the region began to produce high-quality Douro DOC still wines in addition to its traditional Ports. The emergence of a new generation of winemakers, their enthusiasm and energy have helped to dramatically improve the quality of Douro wines.
The diligent, knowledgeable and quality-focused winegrowers of the Douro Valley are dedicating their lives to producing and marketing the finest wine possible.
‘The Douro as it is one of the most beautiful wine regions of the world, with its old stone terraces and the beautiful river. It is also one of the oldest wine regions dating back to Roman times and beyond. Still undiscovered and stunningly inspirational’. – Sophia Bergqvist from Quinta de la Rosa
Come meet the producers in the enchanting Douro Valley
