Portugal's best red wines from the phenomenal vintage 2011

Top Scores for the Douro Boys!

‘New Douro’ Tasting in London…
Word had already gotten around among the afficionados that 2011 was a sensational year for vintage ports. But it also turns out that the red wines from Portugal’s Douro Valley are in no way obliged to take a back seat to their fortified cousins. Further evidence of this can be observed—and not least significantly—in the reviews of celebrated US wine-columnist Mark Squires, who recently published his ratings on And who happens to stand at the top of the list? Of course! Wines from the Douro Boys received the highest scores…

Quinta do Vale Meão

2011 Quinta do Vale Meão Douro Red                       95/100 Points
2011 Quinta do Vale Meão Meandro                          91/100 Points

Francisco Olazabal from Quinta do Vale Meão describes the superb vintage: ‘”After a long, cold and rainy winter, spring arrived with the average rainfall for the year fulfilled – about 400 mm. This situation allowed an earlier than normal but fantastic bud break, with a promising yield in view. Up to the end of the vintage we’ve enjoyed perfect weather, sunny and mild, which allowed us to harvest slowly and to choose the ideal timing for picking the different varieties.’

2011 Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha da Francisca      92/100 Points
2011 Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha do Rio                 91/100 Points

’Harvest ran beautifully, full of sunny days and perfect grape maturity, having started at Vale D. Maria on the 8th of September. The high concentration of sugars and the heat experienced at the last part of the maturation together with the late summer rain was a clear indication of the production of very powerful wines.’ says Cristiano van Zellar from the Quinta Vale D. Maria, fully convinced of this.
He adds, ‘The wines are developing beautifully; they show vivid aromaticity, plenty of fruit and an unbelievable grace in the finish.’
