Why Neusiedlersee?
Neusiedlersee DAC is all about Zweigelt, which is the leading variety in Burgenland’s largest winegrowing region, with some 1,810 hectares under vines. Ten years ago, its winegrowers officially committed themselves to this variety and defined it, in two styles of vinification, as their sole DAC grape variety and thus as their ‘wine of origin’. Zweigelt owes its special regional character – succulent and fruit-forward, with a slightly salty spice to it – not least to the geographic nature of Neusiedlersee DAC: small and medium-sized lakes with high salt and sodium carbonate content, a subterranean mineral-water lake and the special Pannonian microclimate, where Lake Neusiedl serves to moderate any extremes of hot and cold.

Why Carnuntum?
Carnuntum and Zweigelt are simply inseparable. This grape variety is the most important vine in the region and is closely interwoven with Carnuntum’s impressive success story. Exactly thirty years ago, the region’s winegrowers created »Rubin Carnuntum«, a branded wine vinified from Zweigelt that not only promoted regional identity, but also made an enormous contribution to domestic and international awareness of the region. In recent years, the winegrowers have also been involved with scientific exploration of the grape variety in Carnuntum, researching the best sites and optimal conditions for cultivating Zweigelt. The results can most effectively be tasted in the region’s »Riedenweine« (single-vineyard wines) and ÖTW Erste Lage wines.
